my faith is like shifting sand..

so i stand on Your grace...

Shifting Sand
Caedman's Call

Sometimes I believe all the lies
So I can do the things I should despise
And every day I am swayed
By whatever is on my mind

I hear it all depends on my faith
So I'm feeling precarious
The only problem I have with these mysteries
Is they're so mysterious

And like a consumer I've been thinking
If I could just get a bit more
More than my 15 minutes of faith,
Then I'd be secure

My faith is like shifting sand
Changed by every wave
My faith is like shifting sand
So I stand on grace

I've begged you for some proof
For my Thomas eyes to see
A slithering staff, a leprous hand
And lions resting lazily

A glimpse of your back-side glory
And this soaked altar going ablaze
But you know I've seen so much
I explained it away

My faith is like shifting sand
Changed by every wave
My faith is like shifting sand
So I stand on grace

Waters rose as my doubts reigned
My sand-castle faith, it slipped away
Found myself standing on your grace
It'd been there all the time

Even when I think I've mastered trusting in the faithfulness of God, I look back and see how many times my faith has washed away in even the smallest disturbance. I must consistently remind myself "My faith waxes and wanes, but His grace never changes. His faithfulness always remains." My ability to have faith in His unclear plans does not dictate His faithfulness— His faithfulness is not an option, it is a truth. When I pray, "God, be faithful to...." I am not praying, asking God to choose to be faithful in stead of changing Himself—when I pray "God, be faithful to..." I'm really praying "God, open my eyes to see your faithfulness, because it probably won't look like what I expect it to." It's good that His grace even covers my imperfect prayers. It's good that God uses to chooses to prove His faithfulness in ways I have yet to imagine... Most of the time it's in ways I wouldn't even dare to imagine.

Overwhelming, overwhelming grace....
